Often called the “child of Juneteenth,” Freedmen’s Town holds a place unlike any other in American history. Located in Houston’s Fourth Ward, it stands as the city’s first and most significant historic Black neighborhood — established by formerly enslaved people in the immediate aftermath of Juneteenth, when freedom was still brand new and the future was unwritten.

What they built on that swampy, overlooked land was nothing short of extraordinary. Freedmen’s Town flourished into a thriving economic center with more than 400 Black-owned businesses, serving as the hub for 95 percent of Houston’s Black middle class. Churches, schools, law offices, barbershops, and storefronts lined the streets — a community that refused to be defined by what had been done to them, and instead defined itself by what it could create.
