Welcome to the Black Wall Streets

Jackson Ward, Richmond, Virginia

The Harlem of the South. Where Black excellence built its own bank.

Sometimes called the “Harlem of the South,” Jackson Ward’s Second Street became a bustling center of Black commerce — featuring insurance companies, banks, and businesses that served Richmond’s African-American community when the rest of the city turned its back.

But the story that defines this district above all others belongs to Maggie L. Walker. In 1903, she chartered the Saint Luke Penny Bank — making her the first woman in United States history to charter a bank. And she was Black.

Let that land.

The first woman to charter a bank in America was a Black woman from Richmond, Virginia. Her home is now a National Historic Site — a permanent monument to what she built and what she proved possible.
